Candida is the short name used to describe yeast overgrowth in the body. The technical term for yeast overgrowth is candidiasis caused by the overgrowth of the fungus candida albicans. Candida albicans is a single-celled fungus that belongs to the vegetable kingdom. Candida albicans lives in all our mucus membranes, i.e. intestines, eyes, ears, bladder, stomach, lungs, vagina, etc. It is one of the billions of other friendly organisms that serve a useful purpose in the body. One of candida albicans’ important functions is to recognize and destroy harmful bacteria and toxins.

What is the main cause of Candida overgrowth?

The main cause of candida overgrowth is a weakened immune system, usually combined with an overuse of antibiotics, plus a high-carbohydrate/high sugar intake. A major cause of weakened immune systems is stress. Prolonged stress and a high carbohydrate/high sugar diet can lead to candida overgrowth.

The key to controlling candida overgrowth is the importance of a good digestive system and a diet high in fibre and nutrients. Anything that slows or in any way impairs the function of your digestive system can contribute to the overgrowth of harmful bacteria and yeasts, such as candida. Proper digestion allows for foods to work their way through your bowels and intestinal tract in an efficient and timely manner. Things such as extreme stress, insufficient physical activity, and not getting enough sleep can all effect how well your body can process food. A high carbohydrate diet can also contribute to this.
